The Quietest AR Calibers for Suppressed Shooting
A suppressor only silences the muzzle blast. If the bullet is supersonic, it still cracks — and that crack is the loudest thing left.
There are two sounds, and the can only fixes one
Suppressed sound has two independent components. The muzzle blast is expanding gas leaving the barrel — that's what a suppressor traps and slows. The sonic crack is the shockwave from a bullet traveling faster than sound (~1,125 fps), and no suppressor can touch it, because it's generated by the bullet in flight, well downrange of the can.
This is why ammunition choice matters more than which suppressor you buy. A mediocre suppressor with subsonic ammo will be dramatically quieter than a premium suppressor with supersonic ammo. Going subsonic removes an entire noise source; a better can only chips away at the other one.
Why .300 BLK dominates this conversation
.300 BLK was designed from the start to run heavy subsonic bullets (typically 190–220gr) below the speed of sound while still reliably cycling a short-barreled AR. That combination — subsonic, suppressed, reliable, and short — is what makes it the standard answer for a quiet rifle-caliber AR.
It also burns its powder efficiently in a very short barrel, so you're not paying a large velocity or blast penalty for an 8–10 inch build the way you would with 5.56.
Pistol calibers are naturally quiet
.45 ACP is subsonic out of the box in most factory loading — no special ammo required — and its large, slow bullet suppresses exceptionally well. A suppressed .45 PCC is one of the quietest practical setups you can build.
9mm has both supersonic and subsonic factory loads widely available and suppresses very well with the subsonic ones. Ammo is cheap enough to shoot suppressed constantly, which is a real advantage over .300 BLK's cost.
What makes 5.56 hard to quiet
5.56 is a high-pressure cartridge driving a light bullet very fast — it is supersonic in every practical loading, so the sonic crack is always present. A suppressor still helps substantially (and protects your hearing meaningfully), but a suppressed 5.56 will never approach subsonic .300 BLK or .45 ACP for actual quiet.
Short 5.56 barrels compound this: less barrel means more unburnt powder and higher pressure at the muzzle, which is more energy for the suppressor to deal with.
Barrel length, and the legal reality
Longer barrels are quieter, all else equal — more of the powder burns inside the barrel, so there's less pressure to vent at the muzzle. That effect is steep below each caliber's "knee," which ArmoryBench models per caliber in its acoustic engine.
Legally: suppressors are NFA items. They require a Form 4 transfer (or Form 1 to make), a background check, a $200 tax stamp, and a wait that has ranged from weeks to many months. They are prohibited outright in some states. Verify your state law before buying.
