Best AR Caliber for Home Defense

Indoors, the priorities invert. Range and energy matter less than control, over-penetration, and what a muzzle blast does to your hearing in a hallway.

What actually matters indoors

Home-defense distances are measured in feet, not hundreds of yards, so downrange ballistics — the thing most caliber arguments are about — barely matter. What matters is how controllable the rifle is in tight spaces, how the bullet behaves when it misses and hits drywall, and how brutal the muzzle blast is in an enclosed room.

That last point is badly underrated. An unsuppressed rifle fired indoors without hearing protection can cause immediate, permanent hearing damage. This is the single strongest practical argument for a suppressor on a home-defense gun, and a big reason .300 BLK and pistol calibers get recommended for the role.

5.56 NATO — the default, and it's a good one

5.56 is the most common answer and a genuinely sound one. Ammo is cheap and available, recoil is minimal, magazines and parts are universal, and — counter to intuition — a light, fast 5.56 bullet often penetrates less drywall than a 9mm pistol bullet, because it tends to fragment or destabilize on impact rather than punch through intact.

The caveat is blast. A short-barreled 5.56 indoors is extremely loud and produces a large fireball. If you're building a short 5.56 for defense, budget for a suppressor or at minimum a muzzle device chosen to reduce blast rather than a brake, which directs it sideways at everyone next to you.

.300 BLK — built for short, suppressed, indoors

.300 BLK was designed to give near-full performance out of a very short barrel, which is exactly the home-defense use case. It burns its powder efficiently in 8–10 inches where 5.56 is still dumping unburnt powder into a fireball, and it runs suppressed exceptionally well.

You can run supersonic loads for defense and swap to subsonic for quiet range work, using the same rifle, same magazines, and the same bolt as your 5.56 — only the barrel changes. The tradeoff is ammo cost and availability, which are both worse than 5.56.

9mm PCC — the softest-shooting option

A 9mm AR-9 carbine has the least recoil and the least blast of the three, is the cheapest to practice with, and often shares magazines with a handgun you already own. For a recoil-sensitive or less experienced shooter, the ability to actually hit under stress may outweigh any ballistic advantage the rifle calibers have.

The tradeoff is straightforward: pistol-caliber terminal performance, and 9mm generally penetrates more building material than a fragmenting 5.56 load does — the opposite of what people assume.

Barrel length and the legal line

Short barrels handle better indoors, which pushes people toward 10.5–11.5" builds. Be aware of where that puts you legally: a barrel under 16 inches combined with a shoulder stock is a Short-Barreled Rifle under the National Firearms Act, requiring registration and a tax stamp. A pistol brace configuration is regulated differently and the rules have been contested and revised repeatedly.

Is 5.56 dangerous for home defense because of over-penetration?

Less than most people assume. Lightweight, high-velocity 5.56 bullets — especially purpose-built defensive loads — tend to fragment or destabilize when they hit drywall, often penetrating fewer interior walls than a 9mm handgun bullet. Load selection matters far more than caliber here: choose a defensive load engineered for it, not surplus ball ammo.

Do I need a suppressor for a home-defense AR?

You don't need one, but it addresses a real problem. Firing an unsuppressed rifle indoors without hearing protection can cause immediate permanent hearing damage. A suppressor meaningfully reduces that risk. It is an NFA item requiring a tax stamp, background check, and a wait.

What barrel length is best for home defense?

Shorter barrels (10.5–14.5") maneuver better indoors, at the cost of more blast and flash. Remember that under 16 inches with a shoulder stock makes it a Short-Barreled Rifle under the NFA, which requires registration. Many people settle on a 16" carbine to avoid the paperwork entirely.

Sound Is Ranked, Not Measured

ArmoryBench does not publish decibel levels. A 2026 review of published suppressor data found that most manufacturers release either nothing at all or bare numbers without the test standard, weighting, and microphone position needed to compare one against another — and that most cartridges have no published unsuppressed reference level whatsoever. Rather than present figures assembled from sources like that, we show a relative ranking: how loud one configuration is likely to be next to another, and how much to trust that comparison.

These rankings are algorithmic approximations for educational purposes only. They are not laboratory measurements and are no substitute for professional acoustic testing or OSHA/NIOSH occupational noise guidance. Peer-reviewed testing has found no suppressed centerfire rifle configuration reliably below the hearing damage threshold at the shooter’s ear. Always use proper hearing protection when firing any firearm, suppressed or not.

Ballistic Coefficients

Where a manufacturer publishes a ballistic coefficient we use it. Most hunting, defensive, and house-brand loads don't publish one, so those use a value typical of the bullet's construction, flagged as an estimate wherever it appears. Be aware that advertised BCs often run optimistic — some bullets measure meaningfully lower in the field than on the box, and the gap widens past roughly 600 yards as the bullet slows. Treat every trajectory here as a starting point for confirming on paper, not a substitute for it.

Exterior Ballistics

Trajectory, drop, wind drift, and energy figures are computed estimates based on a standard point-mass ballistic model and the inputs you supply. Actual performance varies with atmospheric conditions, chronograph accuracy, and firearm/ammunition variance. Verify zero and trajectory data at the range before hunting or competition use.

Reloading Data

This tool does not calculate chamber pressure and never generates a charge weight from first principles. Any future custom-load feature is constrained to interpolation between published load-data points and must never be the sole basis for a handload. Always verify any load against current published data from the powder and bullet manufacturer, start at the published starting load, and never exceed a published maximum charge.
