Your First AR-15 Build: What Actually Matters

Most first-build mistakes aren't about picking a bad part — they're about picking two good parts that don't work together.

Spend where you'll feel it

Money spent on the barrel, the trigger, and your optic produces differences you notice every time you shoot. Money spent on a stripped lower receiver mostly doesn't — a mil-spec forged lower from a reputable maker does exactly the same job as an expensive billet one, and the expensive one is largely aesthetics.

If your budget is tight, buy a quality barrel and a decent optic, and take the plain lower, the plain charging handle, and the standard stock. You can upgrade the cosmetic parts forever; you can't shoot around a bad barrel.

The things that must match

Barrel caliber ↔ bolt/BCG. The bolt must be made for the cartridge's case head. A 5.56 bolt does not work with 6.5 Grendel or 7.62x39.

Barrel gas system length ↔ gas tube. Carbine, mid-length, and rifle gas tubes are different lengths and are not interchangeable. Match the tube to what the barrel specifies.

Buffer tube ↔ buffer ↔ spring ↔ stock. A carbine tube takes a carbine buffer and spring and a collapsible stock; a rifle-length tube takes a rifle buffer and spring and a fixed stock. Mixing lengths is one of the most common first-build errors.

Handguard ↔ barrel + gas block. The handguard must be short enough to clear your gas block, or use a low-profile gas block designed to fit underneath it.

Muzzle thread pitch ↔ device. 5.56 barrels are usually 1/2x28; .30-caliber barrels are usually 5/8x24. They are not interchangeable.

Caliber and barrel length

For a first build, 5.56 NATO with a 16" barrel is the boring, correct answer. It avoids NFA paperwork entirely, ammo is cheap and everywhere, every part fits, and it does everything a general-purpose rifle needs to do.

Get a 1:7 or 1:8 twist so you're not locked out of heavy ammo later. Choose mid-length gas over carbine gas on a 16" barrel if you have the option — it's a softer, smoother-cycling system.

What to skip on build one

Lasers, bipods, angled grips, and a rail full of accessories add weight and cost while solving problems you haven't encountered yet. Build the rifle, shoot it a few hundred rounds, and let actual experience tell you what's missing.

The one accessory worth buying up front is a weapon light if this rifle has any defensive role. You cannot make a safe identification of a target you can't see.

Assembled upper vs. building from parts

A complete upper receiver — barrel, bolt, handguard, and gas system already assembled and headspaced — removes the fiddliest and most error-prone part of the process, and usually costs little more than the sum of the parts. For a first build it's a very reasonable choice.

Assembling the lower is the easy half, needs minimal tools, and is where most people enjoy the process anyway.

Is it cheaper to build or buy an AR-15?

Buying a complete budget rifle is usually cheaper than building an equivalent one from parts. Building wins when you want specific components — a better barrel, trigger, or handguard — because you're not paying for parts you plan to replace immediately.

What barrel twist should a first AR-15 have?

1:7 or 1:8. Both stabilize the full range of common 5.56 bullet weights including heavy 75–77gr match and defensive loads. A 1:9 twist limits you to lighter bullets and can leave you unable to shoot heavy ammo well later.

Do I need a special tool to build an AR-15 lower?

Very few. A punch set, a hammer, and an armorer's wrench for the buffer tube castle nut cover most of it, plus a vise block to hold the receiver. The upper receiver — barrel installation and headspacing — is the part most first-time builders buy pre-assembled.

Sound Is Ranked, Not Measured

ArmoryBench does not publish decibel levels. A 2026 review of published suppressor data found that most manufacturers release either nothing at all or bare numbers without the test standard, weighting, and microphone position needed to compare one against another — and that most cartridges have no published unsuppressed reference level whatsoever. Rather than present figures assembled from sources like that, we show a relative ranking: how loud one configuration is likely to be next to another, and how much to trust that comparison.

These rankings are algorithmic approximations for educational purposes only. They are not laboratory measurements and are no substitute for professional acoustic testing or OSHA/NIOSH occupational noise guidance. Peer-reviewed testing has found no suppressed centerfire rifle configuration reliably below the hearing damage threshold at the shooter’s ear. Always use proper hearing protection when firing any firearm, suppressed or not.

Ballistic Coefficients

Where a manufacturer publishes a ballistic coefficient we use it. Most hunting, defensive, and house-brand loads don't publish one, so those use a value typical of the bullet's construction, flagged as an estimate wherever it appears. Be aware that advertised BCs often run optimistic — some bullets measure meaningfully lower in the field than on the box, and the gap widens past roughly 600 yards as the bullet slows. Treat every trajectory here as a starting point for confirming on paper, not a substitute for it.

Exterior Ballistics

Trajectory, drop, wind drift, and energy figures are computed estimates based on a standard point-mass ballistic model and the inputs you supply. Actual performance varies with atmospheric conditions, chronograph accuracy, and firearm/ammunition variance. Verify zero and trajectory data at the range before hunting or competition use.

Reloading Data

This tool does not calculate chamber pressure and never generates a charge weight from first principles. Any future custom-load feature is constrained to interpolation between published load-data points and must never be the sole basis for a handload. Always verify any load against current published data from the powder and bullet manufacturer, start at the published starting load, and never exceed a published maximum charge.

NFA Items

Configurations involving suppressors, or a barrel under 16" paired with a shoulder stock (SBR), require ATF approval (Form 1 or Form 4), a background check, and an approval wait period before assembly or possession. As of January 1, 2026, the associated $200 federal tax was eliminated by federal law; the registration, background-check, and approval process itself was not eliminated and remains fully in effect. Verify current law in your jurisdiction — you are solely responsible for completing all required legal steps.
