AR Barrel Length: Velocity, Sound, and the Legal Line

Every inch of barrel is a trade between velocity and handling — and below 16 inches, a legal question enters the picture.

Velocity: roughly linear, until it isn't

As a rule of thumb, 5.56 gains or loses on the order of 25–30 fps per inch of barrel across common lengths. Cutting a 16" barrel to 11.5" costs meaningful velocity, which shortens the distance at which the bullet still expands or fragments reliably, and moves the transonic point closer.

The rate isn't constant across cartridges. .300 BLK loses very little per inch because it was designed to burn its powder in a short barrel — which is exactly why it's the short-barrel darling. 9mm loses almost nothing. Large magnum-ish rifle cartridges lose the most.

Sound and flash get worse fast when you go short

Shortening a barrel means more powder is still burning when the bullet exits, so more pressure and burning gas vent at the muzzle. That means more noise and dramatically more visible flash. The effect accelerates below a caliber-specific "knee" — for 5.56 that's around 10.5 inches, below which each inch removed costs disproportionately more noise.

This is why very short 5.56 builds are so punishing to shoot indoors or beside other people, and why a suppressor or a blast-reducing muzzle device matters so much more on a short gun than a 16" one.

The 16-inch line

Federal law defines a rifle with a barrel under 16 inches and a shoulder stock as a Short-Barreled Rifle (SBR) — an NFA item requiring registration, a tax stamp, and approval before you build or possess it. This is why 16" is far and away the most common AR barrel length: it's the shortest you can go with a stock and no paperwork.

14.5" barrels are a common workaround: pin and weld a muzzle device to bring the permanent overall length to 16 inches or more, and it's legally a rifle. The tradeoff is that the muzzle device is now permanent.

Pistol configurations with a brace instead of a stock are regulated differently, and those rules have been repeatedly revised and litigated. Verify the current rules before building one.

Which length for which job

10.5–11.5" — maximum maneuverability for indoor/vehicle use, requires SBR paperwork or a brace, loudest and flashiest. Pairs naturally with a suppressor.

14.5" — near-16" performance with slightly better handling; needs a pinned and welded muzzle device to avoid SBR status.

16" — the default. No paperwork, good balance of velocity and handling, works for everything from defense to hunting to range use.

18" — the sweet spot for accuracy-focused builds; noticeably more velocity, usually paired with a rifle-length gas system that cycles very smoothly.

20" — full-length. Maximum velocity from the cartridge, softest-shooting gas system, at the cost of being long and front-heavy.

Gas system length has to follow

Barrel length constrains gas system length: carbine-length gas suits roughly 10–16" barrels, mid-length suits 14–18", and rifle-length suits 18–20"+. Longer gas systems have a lower port pressure and a longer dwell time, which produces a softer, smoother cycle and less wear.

Given the choice on a 16" barrel, mid-length gas is generally the better-shooting option over carbine gas.

Common questions

How much velocity do you lose with a shorter AR barrel?

For 5.56, roughly 25–30 fps per inch across common lengths. The rate varies substantially by cartridge: .300 BLK loses very little per inch because it's designed to burn its powder in a short barrel, while larger rifle cartridges lose considerably more.

Why is 16 inches the standard AR-15 barrel length?

Is mid-length or carbine gas better on a 16 inch barrel?

Mid-length is generally preferred on a 16" barrel. The longer gas system runs at lower port pressure with a longer dwell time, producing a softer recoil impulse and less stress on the components.

Sound Is Ranked, Not Measured

ArmoryBench does not publish decibel levels. A 2026 review of published suppressor data found that most manufacturers release either nothing at all or bare numbers without the test standard, weighting, and microphone position needed to compare one against another — and that most cartridges have no published unsuppressed reference level whatsoever. Rather than present figures assembled from sources like that, we show a relative ranking: how loud one configuration is likely to be next to another, and how much to trust that comparison.

These rankings are algorithmic approximations for educational purposes only. They are not laboratory measurements and are no substitute for professional acoustic testing or OSHA/NIOSH occupational noise guidance. Peer-reviewed testing has found no suppressed centerfire rifle configuration reliably below the hearing damage threshold at the shooter’s ear. Always use proper hearing protection when firing any firearm, suppressed or not.

Ballistic Coefficients

Where a manufacturer publishes a ballistic coefficient we use it. Most hunting, defensive, and house-brand loads don't publish one, so those use a value typical of the bullet's construction, flagged as an estimate wherever it appears. Be aware that advertised BCs often run optimistic — some bullets measure meaningfully lower in the field than on the box, and the gap widens past roughly 600 yards as the bullet slows. Treat every trajectory here as a starting point for confirming on paper, not a substitute for it.

Exterior Ballistics

Trajectory, drop, wind drift, and energy figures are computed estimates based on a standard point-mass ballistic model and the inputs you supply. Actual performance varies with atmospheric conditions, chronograph accuracy, and firearm/ammunition variance. Verify zero and trajectory data at the range before hunting or competition use.

Reloading Data

This tool does not calculate chamber pressure and never generates a charge weight from first principles. Any future custom-load feature is constrained to interpolation between published load-data points and must never be the sole basis for a handload. Always verify any load against current published data from the powder and bullet manufacturer, start at the published starting load, and never exceed a published maximum charge.
